Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia

Expense-paid fellowships for working journalists

J2J Global Media Training (12-14 November 2012) and

43rd Union World Conference on Lung Health (13-17 November 2012)

APPLICATION DEADLINE: 23 July 2012

The Journalist to Journalist Project of the National Press Foundation and the International Union Against Tuberculosis and Lung Disease (The Union) are offering fellowships to attend a three-day journalist training programme on lung health and related issues (tuberculosis; TB/HIV; asthma, COPD and other non-communicable diseases; childhood pneumonia, tobacco control) at the 43rd Union World Conference on Lung Health in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

The Union World Conference is the largest annual conference focusing on lung health issues as they affect low- and middle-income countries. The theme of this year's conference is "Driving Sustainability through Mutual Responsibility," highlighting the need for all stakeholders to work together on behalf of global lung health. More than 3,000 delegates from 120+ countries are expected to attend.

The three-day J2J programme is designed for working journalists who want to increase their knowledge and skill at developing stories on lung health issues – from the extent of the problem to the new research that is in the pipeline. The sessions will feature presentations and discussions with experts, as well as practical training in turning scientific information into effective print, online and broadcast stories.

Applications are sought from journalists working in any medium. Special attention will be given to applications from journalists working in low- and middle-income countries. Up to 20 fellowships will be awarded, which will include conference registration, roundtrip travel by air and train (as needed), hotel accommodation and per diem.

Applicants should have at least three years of professional journalism experience, including significant coverage of health topics. All J2J sessions will be in English, so proficient spoken and written English are essential.

The deadline for applications was 5:00 PM EST, 23 July 2012. Only online applications were accepted.
